What Happens If Your G2 Licence Expires in Ontario?
Your G2 licence does not last forever. If you do not take and pass the G road test before your G2 expires, you may lose your driving privileges entirely. Here is what you need to know about G2 expiry in Ontario.
Based on the official Ontario Driver's Handbook and real DriveTest scenarios. Updated October 2026.
Quick Answer
Your G2 licence is valid within a 5-year window that starts from the date you passed your G1 knowledge test. If you do not pass the G road test before the 5-year mark, your G2 expires and you lose your driving privileges. You would typically need to restart the licensing process from the G1 stage.
The Ontario Graduated Licensing Timeline
Ontario uses a graduated licensing system with three stages: G1, G2, and G. Understanding the timeline is essential to avoid losing your licence.
Pass the knowledge test. You must hold G1 for at least 12 months (8 months with an approved driving course) before taking the G2 road test.
Pass the G2 road test. You must hold G2 for at least 12 months before taking the G road test. Your G2 is valid within the 5-year G1 exit window.
Pass the G road test. You receive a full Ontario driver's licence with no restrictions.
The 5-Year G1 Exit Window
The most important date to track is the date you passed your G1 knowledge test. From that date, you have 5 years to complete the entire graduated licensing process and pass the G road test.
If you do not pass the G test within 5 years of your G1 date, your G2 licence expires. You cannot legally drive, and you must typically restart from the G1 stage.
What Happens When a G2 Expires
You lose your driving privileges
An expired G2 is not a valid driver's licence. Driving with an expired licence is illegal in Ontario.
Your insurance may not cover you
If you are involved in a collision while driving with an expired licence, your insurance company may deny your claim.
You must restart the process
In most cases, you must retake the G1 knowledge test, serve the waiting period, and retake the G2 road test before you can attempt the G test again.
You may face fines
Driving with an expired licence can result in fines under the Highway Traffic Act.
How to Avoid G2 Expiry
The simplest way to avoid G2 expiry is to book your G road test well in advance of the 5-year mark.
- Know your G1 date. Check your original G1 test receipt or your ServiceOntario account.
- Book early. G test wait times at busy DriveTest centres can be 3–6 months or longer. Book at least 6 months before your 5-year mark.
- Consider a less busy location. Smaller DriveTest centres often have shorter wait times.
- Contact DriveTest if you are close to expiry. If you are within a few months of the 5-year mark and cannot get a test date, contact DriveTest Ontario to discuss your options.
Renewing Your Physical Licence Card
Your physical Ontario driver's licence card has a separate expiry date printed on it. You must renew the card before it expires — this is a separate process from the G2 licensing window. Renewing the card does not extend your G2 status.
You can renew your licence card online, by mail, or in person at a ServiceOntario location.

5 QuestionsHow long do you have to complete the G road test after getting your G2 in Ontario?
Frequently Asked Questions
How long is a G2 licence valid in Ontario?
The G2 licence is valid within the 5-year G1 exit window. This 5-year period starts from the date you passed your G1 knowledge test — not the date you received your G2. If you do not pass the G road test within 5 years of your G1, your G2 expires.
Can I renew or extend my G2 licence?
Ontario does not offer a standard G2 renewal or extension. If your G2 is about to expire and you have not yet taken the G test, contact DriveTest Ontario as soon as possible to discuss your options. In some circumstances, extensions may be available, but this is not guaranteed.
What do I have to do if my G2 has already expired?
If your G2 has expired, you typically must restart the licensing process from the beginning — retaking the G1 knowledge test, serving the G1 waiting period, and then retaking the G2 road test before you can attempt the G test again.
Does my physical licence card expire separately from my G2 status?
Yes. Your physical Ontario driver's licence card has an expiry date printed on it. You must renew the card before it expires, regardless of your licence class. Renewing the card does not extend your G2 status — the 5-year G1 exit window is separate.
How long are DriveTest wait times in Ontario?
Wait times vary significantly by location and season. In busy areas like Toronto, Mississauga, and Brampton, G test wait times can be 3–6 months or longer. Book well in advance — do not wait until the last few months of your 5-year window.
What is the minimum time I must hold a G2 before taking the G test?
You must hold a G2 licence for at least 12 months before you are eligible to take the G road test.
