Ontario's Graduated Licensing System
How the Ontario Driving Licence System Works (G1 → G2 → G)
Ontario uses a Graduated Licensing System (GLS) that takes new drivers through three stages before earning a full G licence. This system is designed to build driving skills gradually and safely — and it applies to all new drivers in Ontario, Canada, regardless of age.
The process starts with the G1 knowledge test — a written exam at a DriveTest centre covering road signs and rules of the road. After holding your G1 for at least 12 months (or 8 months with a certified driving course), you can take the G2 road test. Finally, after 12 months with a G2, you can take the G full licence test, which includes mandatory highway driving.

Driving 40 km/h or more over the speed limit in Ontario is classified as stunt driving. Penalties include an immediate 30-day licence suspension, 14-day vehicle impoundment, and fines up to $10,000.
