What Happens After Passing Your G2 Test Ontario 2026
Congratulations — you passed your G2 road test! But your journey to a full Ontario G licence is not over yet. This guide explains exactly what changes after your G2, what restrictions still apply, how long you must wait before taking the G test, and what to do next to earn your full licence.
Based on the official Ontario Driver's Handbook and real DriveTest scenarios. Updated October 2026.
What Changes After Your G2
You can now do
- Drive alone — no accompanying driver needed
- Drive on 400-series highways
- Drive at any time of day or night
- Carry passengers (with some restrictions)
- Drive to any destination in Ontario
Still restricted
- Zero blood alcohol tolerance
- Passenger limits midnight–5 a.m. (under 22)
- Must wear seatbelt at all times
- Cannot drive while impaired by cannabis/drugs
- Still subject to novice driver demerit thresholds
G2 Restrictions That Still Apply
Zero blood alcohol
Any detectable amount of alcohol in your system is illegal. This applies 24/7, not just at night. The limit for fully licensed drivers is 0.08 — G2 drivers have zero tolerance.
Zero cannabis impairment
G2 drivers cannot drive while impaired by cannabis or any drug. Ontario has zero tolerance for THC in novice drivers' systems.
Passenger limits (under 22, midnight–5 a.m.)
If you are under 22, between midnight and 5 a.m. you may carry no more than one passenger aged 19 or under — unless a fully licensed driver (4+ years) is in the front passenger seat.
Seatbelts mandatory
Every occupant must wear a seatbelt. As the driver, you are responsible for ensuring passengers under 16 are buckled. Failure to ensure seatbelt use can result in fines.
Novice demerit thresholds
G2 drivers still face the novice demerit thresholds: warning at 6 points, suspension at 9 points (60 days). Fully licensed drivers have higher thresholds (warning at 9, suspension at 15).
Your Path to a Full G Licence
- 1
Hold your G2 for 12 months
The standard waiting period is 12 months from the date you passed your G2 road test. If you completed an approved driver education course before your G2 test, this is reduced to 8 months.
- 2
Book your G road test
Book online at drivetest.ca or by phone. Book early — GTA centres like Etobicoke, Scarborough, and Brampton often have wait times of 4–8 weeks or more.
- 3
Prepare for highway driving
The G test requires driving on a 400-series highway. Practice merging, lane changes, and exits. The highway portion is what separates the G test from the G2 test.
- 4
Pass the G road test
The G test lasts 20–30 minutes and includes both city and highway driving. Pass with no critical errors and you receive your full G licence on the spot.
- 5
Receive your full G licence
With a full G licence, all novice restrictions are lifted. You can drive on any road, at any time, with any number of passengers. Your demerit threshold increases to 15 points.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I still have restrictions after passing my G2?
Yes. G2 drivers still have several restrictions: zero blood alcohol tolerance, passenger limits at night (if under 22), and must wear a seatbelt at all times. However, you can now drive on 400-series highways and drive without an accompanying driver.
How long is my G2 licence valid?
Your G2 licence is valid for 5 years from the date your G1 was issued. You must pass the G road test within that 5-year window. If you do not, you will need to restart the graduated licensing process.
Can I drive alone after passing my G2?
Yes. One of the biggest changes after passing your G2 is that you can drive alone — without an accompanying driver. You can also drive at any time of day or night (though passenger restrictions apply for drivers under 22 between midnight and 5 a.m.).
When should I book my G road test?
You can book your G road test as soon as you are eligible (12 months after G2, or 8 months with a driver education course). Book early — DriveTest centres can have wait times of several weeks to months, especially in the GTA.
What is the G road test like?
The G road test is more advanced than the G2 test. It includes mandatory highway driving on a 400-series highway (merging, lane changes, exiting), as well as city driving. The test typically lasts 20–30 minutes.
What happens if my G2 expires before I take the G test?
If your G2 expires (5 years from G1 issue date), you lose your driving privileges and must restart the graduated licensing process from the beginning — including the G1 knowledge test. Do not let your licence expire.
