Regulatory Signs
White background with black or red text/symbols. These are laws — you must obey them at all times or risk a fine or demerit points.
STOP Sign
Red octagon
Come to a complete stop before the stop line or crosswalk. Wait until it is safe before proceeding.
Common Mistake: Rolling slowly through a stop sign is still a violation — wheels must be fully still.
Memory Tip: Count "one-one-thousand" after stopping to make sure you've fully stopped.
YIELD Sign
Red-bordered downward triangle
Slow down and give the right-of-way to traffic already in the intersection or road. Stop if necessary.
Common Mistake: Many drivers confuse yield with stop — you only stop if traffic is present.
Memory Tip: Yield = give way. You may not need to stop if the road is clear.
Speed Limit Sign
White rectangle with black text
Maximum speed allowed under ideal conditions. You can be fined for going even 1 km/h over the posted limit.
Common Mistake: Speed limits apply even when roads are empty — examiners watch your speedometer.
Memory Tip: In school zones the limit drops to 40 km/h when children are present.
No Parking Sign
White rectangle with red circle and slash
Parking is not permitted at this location or during the times shown on the sign.
Common Mistake: Stopping briefly to drop someone off is usually allowed — parking means leaving the vehicle.
No U-Turn Sign
White circle with red slash over U-turn arrow
U-turns are prohibited at this location. Making one here is an immediate fail on the G1 test.
Common Mistake: This sign is often missed at busy intersections — always scan for it before turning.
Do Not Enter Sign
Red circle with white horizontal bar
You cannot enter this road from this direction — usually posted on one-way streets or highway exit ramps.
Common Mistake: Entering a one-way street the wrong way is an automatic fail on any road test.
Memory Tip: If you see this sign, you are going the wrong way. Stop and reverse safely.
No Left Turn Sign
White circle with red slash over left-turn arrow
Left turns are prohibited at this intersection. Turn right or go straight instead.
No Right Turn Sign
White circle with red slash over right-turn arrow
Right turns are prohibited at this intersection. This is often posted at busy pedestrian crossings.
Common Mistake: Easy to miss when you're focused on traffic — always check signs before turning.
One Way Sign
Black rectangle with white arrow
Traffic flows in one direction only. You must drive in the direction the arrow points.
Memory Tip: On one-way streets you may pass on the right if there is a clear lane.
Keep Right Sign
White rectangle with black arrow pointing right
Stay to the right of a traffic island, median, or obstruction ahead.
Wrong Way Sign
Red rectangle with white text
You are travelling in the wrong direction on a one-way road or highway ramp. Stop immediately and turn around safely.
Common Mistake: This sign is your last warning — if you see it, you are already going the wrong way.
Warning Signs
Yellow diamond shape with black symbols. These warn you of hazards or changes in road conditions ahead — slow down and be alert.
Curve Ahead
Yellow diamond with curved arrow
A sharp curve is ahead. Reduce your speed before entering the curve — not during it.
Memory Tip: Brake before the curve, not in it. Braking mid-curve can cause skidding.
Slippery When Wet
Yellow diamond with car skidding symbol
Road surface becomes slippery in wet or icy conditions. Reduce speed and increase following distance.
Common Mistake: Many drivers ignore this sign in dry weather — but it's still a warning to be cautious.
Pedestrian Crossing
Yellow diamond with walking figure
Pedestrians may be crossing ahead. Slow down and be prepared to stop for people in or near the crosswalk.
Common Mistake: You must yield to pedestrians already in the crosswalk — not just those stepping off the curb.
Traffic Light Ahead
Yellow diamond with traffic light symbol
A traffic signal is ahead, often hidden by a hill or curve. Be prepared to stop.
Memory Tip: This sign is common on rural roads where signals are unexpected.
Bicycle Crossing
Yellow diamond with cyclist symbol
Cyclists may be crossing or entering the road ahead. Watch for bikes and give them space.
Merge Sign
Yellow diamond with merging lanes symbol
Two lanes of traffic are merging into one. Adjust your speed and position to merge safely.
Common Mistake: Failing to check mirrors and blind spots before merging is a common G2 test fault.
Steep Hill (Trucks)
Yellow diamond with truck on hill
A steep downhill grade is ahead. Trucks must use lower gears. All drivers should reduce speed.
Memory Tip: Use engine braking on long descents to avoid overheating your brakes.
Temporary / Construction Signs
Orange background with black symbols or text. Posted in construction and work zones — fines are doubled in these areas.
Construction Zone Sign
Orange rectangle or diamond with black text/symbols
You are entering a construction or maintenance zone. Reduce speed, watch for workers, and follow all posted signs.
Common Mistake: Fines for speeding in construction zones are doubled in Ontario — even if no workers are present.
Memory Tip: Treat every orange sign as a command, not a suggestion.
School Zone Signs
Fluorescent yellow-green or yellow pentagonal signs. School zones have a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h when children are present.
School Zone Sign
Fluorescent yellow-green pentagon with children symbol
You are near a school. Speed limit is 40 km/h when children are present — typically before 9 a.m. and after 3 p.m. on school days.
Common Mistake: The 40 km/h limit applies only when children are present, but examiners expect you to slow down whenever you see this sign.
Memory Tip: When in doubt, slow to 40 km/h — it's always the safer choice near schools.
School Zone Speed Limit
White rectangle with black "40" text
Maximum speed of 40 km/h in this school zone. This applies during school hours when children may be present.
Common Mistake: Driving 50 km/h through a school zone during school hours is a serious offence.
Highway & Information Signs
Green background with white text for directions and distances. Blue signs indicate nearby services. These help you navigate safely.
Highway Direction Sign
Green rectangle with white text and arrows
Indicates an upcoming highway exit, interchange, or destination with distance in kilometres.
Memory Tip: Begin moving to the correct lane well before the exit — last-minute lane changes are dangerous and a test fault.
Motorist Services Sign
Blue rectangle with white symbols
Gas stations, food, lodging, hospitals, and other services are available at the next exit.
Highway Speed Limit
White rectangle with black "100" text
Maximum speed of 100 km/h on this highway. This is the standard limit on Ontario 400-series highways.
Common Mistake: Driving significantly below the highway speed limit (e.g., 80 km/h) is a fault on the G road test.
Memory Tip: On the G test, drive at or near 100 km/h on the highway — not 80 km/h out of nervousness.
Railway Crossing Sign
Yellow circle with X and RR, or white X-shaped crossbuck
A railway crossing is ahead. Slow down, look both ways, and be prepared to stop for trains.
Common Mistake: You must stop if a train is approaching — never try to beat a train across the tracks.
Memory Tip: Roll down your window at railway crossings to listen for approaching trains.
