Highway Driving Basics Ontario 2026 — G1 & G Test Prep
Highway driving is tested on both the G1 knowledge test and the full G road test. This guide covers merging, lane discipline, following distance, school zone rules near highway exits, vehicle safety requirements, and the rules specific to Ontario's 400-series highways.
Based on the official Ontario Driver's Handbook and real DriveTest scenarios. Updated October 2026.
Merging onto a Highway
Merging is one of the most tested highway skills. Follow these steps:
- 1Check your mirrors and signal before entering the acceleration lane.
- 2Accelerate to match the speed of highway traffic (usually 100 km/h).
- 3Check your blind spot for vehicles in the right lane.
- 4Merge smoothly into a safe gap — do not stop on the ramp.
- 5Cancel your signal and maintain your speed.
Lane Discipline on the Highway
Normal driving, slower vehicles, entering/exiting
General travel on 3+ lane highways
Passing only — return right after passing
Staying in the left lane when not passing is illegal in Ontario under the Highway Traffic Act. Police actively enforce this, especially on the 400, 401, and QEW. Return to the right lane promptly after passing.

G1 Driver Highway Restrictions
G1 drivers have specific restrictions that apply to highway driving. Violating these restrictions can result in fines and demerit points — and puts both you and your accompanying driver at risk.
No 400-series highways
G1 drivers cannot drive on any 400-series highway or high-speed expressway (e.g., DVP, Gardiner, QEW).
Accompanying driver required
A fully licensed driver with 4+ years of experience must sit in the front passenger seat at all times.
Zero blood alcohol
G1 drivers must have zero blood alcohol. This applies on all roads, including highways.
No driving midnight–5 a.m.
G1 drivers cannot drive between midnight and 5 a.m. regardless of road type or accompanying driver.
Exception: driving instructor
A G1 driver may drive on a 400-series highway if accompanied by a licensed driving instructor.
Vehicle Safety Checks Before Highway Driving
A vehicle breakdown on a 400-series highway is dangerous. Ontario law requires that your vehicle be in safe operating condition. Before any highway trip, complete these checks:
Tires
- Correct tire pressure (check door jamb sticker)
- Minimum 1.6mm tread depth (use a toonie test)
- No visible damage or bulges
Lights
- Headlights (low and high beam)
- Brake lights and tail lights
- Turn signals (front and rear)
Fluids
- Engine oil level
- Coolant level
- Windshield washer fluid
Safety
- All seatbelts functioning
- Mirrors properly adjusted
- No warning lights on dashboard

Frequently Asked Questions
Can G1 drivers drive on the highway?
G1 drivers are not permitted to drive on 400-series highways or high-speed expressways. They must be accompanied by a fully licensed driver with at least 4 years of experience sitting in the front passenger seat. The only exception is when accompanied by a licensed driving instructor.
What should I do if I miss my highway exit?
Never reverse on a highway. Continue to the next exit, turn around safely, and return. Reversing on a highway is extremely dangerous and illegal.
Is it illegal to drive slowly in the left lane?
Yes. In Ontario, it is illegal to drive in the left lane of a multi-lane highway if you are not passing another vehicle. You can be fined for unnecessary left-lane driving.
What vehicle checks should I do before a highway trip?
Before any highway trip, check: tire pressure and tread depth, all fluid levels (oil, coolant, washer fluid), that all lights are working (headlights, brake lights, signals), that mirrors are properly adjusted, and that your seatbelt is functioning. A vehicle breakdown on a 400-series highway is dangerous and can result in a fine if the vehicle is not roadworthy.
What is the minimum speed on Ontario highways?
The minimum speed on 400-series highways is 60 km/h. Driving significantly below the flow of traffic is dangerous and can result in a careless driving charge.
