Ontario G Test & G2 Test Checklist 2026 — What to Bring to DriveTest
Showing up to your DriveTest appointment without the right documents or a roadworthy vehicle means an automatic cancellation — and losing your test fee. This complete checklist covers everything you need to bring for your G2 or G road test in Ontario.
Based on official DriveTest Ontario requirements. Updated October 2026. Applies to all DriveTest centres across Ontario — Toronto, Brampton, Mississauga, Ottawa, Hamilton, and more.
Missing documents = cancelled test, no refund
DriveTest Ontario will cancel your road test if you arrive without your valid licence, without a roadworthy vehicle, or without valid registration and insurance. Test fees are generally non-refundable in these cases.
Complete DriveTest Checklist
Required ID Documents
RequiredYour current Ontario driver's licence (G1 for G2 test; G2 for G test)
You cannot take the test without your current licence. If you lost it, get a replacement before booking.
Proof of identity (if your licence doesn't have a photo)
Most Ontario licences have photos. New G1 holders may need additional ID.
Your Vehicle
RequiredA roadworthy vehicle in good working condition
The examiner will inspect the vehicle before the test. Bald tires, broken lights, or a cracked windshield can result in a cancelled test — with no refund.
Valid vehicle registration
Must be in the glove compartment. The examiner may ask to see it.
Valid vehicle insurance (pink slip)
Ontario law requires valid insurance. Keep the pink slip in the vehicle at all times.
All lights working (headlights, brake lights, turn signals)
Check all lights the day before. A single burned-out bulb can cancel your test.
Windshield wipers in working order
Examiners check this. Streaky or broken wipers are a safety concern.
Horn working
The examiner may test the horn before the road test begins.
Practical Items to Bring
Comfortable, closed-toe shoes
Flip-flops and high heels can affect your ability to brake smoothly. Wear shoes you can drive in confidently.
Glasses or contact lenses (if required for driving)
If your licence has a vision restriction, you must wear corrective lenses during the test.
Water bottle
Staying hydrated helps with focus and reduces test anxiety.
Confirmation email or booking number
Print it or have it on your phone. DriveTest staff may ask for it at check-in.
Vehicle Pre-Test Inspection Checklist
Do this check the evening before your test — not the morning of. If you find a problem, you'll have time to fix it or rebook without losing your fee.

Day-of Timeline — What to Expect
Arrive at the DriveTest centre
Check in at the front desk. Bring your licence and booking confirmation.
Pre-test vehicle inspection
The examiner checks your vehicle — lights, horn, wipers, tires. Adjust your mirrors and seat now.
Road test begins
The examiner will give you directions. Drive normally — smooth, safe, and confident.
Test ends, results given
The examiner will tell you if you passed or failed and explain any errors on the score sheet.
What NOT to Bring to Your DriveTest
Just as important as what you bring is what you should leave behind — or avoid entirely. These common mistakes have caused test cancellations and unnecessary failures for Ontario drivers.
Don't bring a nervous passenger
Only you and the examiner are permitted in the vehicle during the road test. A nervous friend or family member waiting in the car is not allowed — and their anxiety can transfer to you before the test even starts.
Don't bring a car with dashboard warning lights on
A vehicle with active warning lights (check engine, ABS, tire pressure, etc.) signals a mechanical issue. The examiner may refuse to conduct the test, and you will lose your fee. Fix any warning lights before your appointment.
Don't bring a car with expired insurance or registration
Ontario law requires valid insurance and registration at all times. If your pink slip or registration sticker is expired, the examiner will cancel the test. Check both documents the day before.
Don't bring your phone out during the test
Any phone use — even checking the time — is an automatic fail. Keep your phone in your pocket or bag and leave it there for the entire test.
Don't arrive in flip-flops or high heels
Footwear affects your ability to brake smoothly and confidently. Wear closed-toe shoes you can drive in comfortably.
Don't arrive late
Missing your appointment means losing your test fee. Arrive 15–20 minutes early to check in, calm your nerves, and adjust your mirrors and seat.

Frequently Asked Questions
What happens if I forget my licence at home?
Your test will be cancelled and you will lose your test fee. DriveTest Ontario requires you to present your current valid Ontario driver's licence before the test begins. Always double-check before leaving home.
Can I use a borrowed or rented car for the G2 or G test?
Yes, you can use a borrowed or rented vehicle as long as it is properly registered and insured, in good working condition, and you have permission from the owner. The vehicle must pass the pre-test inspection.
What does the examiner check before the road test?
The examiner will typically check: all lights (headlights, brake lights, turn signals), horn, windshield wipers, tires, and that the vehicle is generally roadworthy. They may also ask you to show your registration and insurance.
What should I do if my car fails the pre-test inspection?
If your vehicle fails the pre-test inspection, your test will be cancelled. You will need to fix the issue and rebook. Unfortunately, the test fee is typically not refunded in this situation. Always inspect your vehicle the day before.
How early should I arrive at the DriveTest centre?
Arrive at least 15–20 minutes before your scheduled test time. This gives you time to check in, calm your nerves, and adjust your mirrors and seat before the examiner gets in the car.
Do I need to bring my own car to the DriveTest centre?
Yes. DriveTest Ontario does not provide vehicles for road tests. You must bring your own vehicle (or a borrowed/rented one) that is properly registered, insured, and in good working condition.
Final Thoughts — Don't Let Preparation Be Your Downfall
The DriveTest Ontario road test is a skills assessment — but it can be derailed before it even begins by something as simple as a forgotten document or a burned-out brake light. The good news: every item on this checklist is completely within your control.
- Check your vehicle the evening before — not the morning of — so you have time to fix any issues.
- Confirm your licence, registration, and insurance are valid and in the car.
- Arrive 15–20 minutes early to check in and settle your nerves.
- Wear appropriate footwear and leave your phone in your bag.
- Review the G2 test route in your area so the roads feel familiar on test day.
