Ontario G1 Test Requirements — What You Need to Know Before You Go
Before you can take the Ontario G1 knowledge test, there are eligibility requirements, identification requirements, and preparation steps you need to understand. This guide covers what you need — and what to expect when you arrive at the DriveTest centre.
Official source: Requirements, fees, and accepted identification are set by the Ontario government and DriveTest. Always verify current requirements at DriveTest.ca before your appointment. GTest Canada is an independent practice resource — not affiliated with DriveTest or the Ontario government.
Eligibility Requirements
To apply for a G1 licence in Ontario, you must meet the following basic requirements set by the Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO):
- Age: You must be at least 16 years old.
- Vision: You must pass a basic vision screening at the DriveTest centre.
- Identification: You must present acceptable government-issued ID (see below).
- Fee: You must pay the applicable test fee at the DriveTest centre.
There is no residency requirement for the knowledge test itself, but you must be legally entitled to be in Canada. Check DriveTest.ca for the current full eligibility criteria.
Identification Requirements
You must bring acceptable identification to the DriveTest centre. DriveTest publishes a full list of accepted documents on their website. Commonly accepted documents include:
- Canadian passport
- Canadian birth certificate
- Permanent resident card
- Canadian citizenship card
- Confirmation of permanent residence
The Knowledge Test
The G1 knowledge test is a 40-question multiple-choice exam administered on a computer at a DriveTest centre. It is divided into two sections:
- 20 questions on road signs — you need at least 16/20 to pass this section
- 20 questions on rules of the road — you need at least 16/20 to pass this section
Both sections must be passed independently. There is no time limit. Most people finish in 20–30 minutes.
The test content is based on the official Ontario Driver's Handbook, available free on the MTO website. Reading the handbook thoroughly is the most important preparation step.
What Happens After You Pass
When you pass the G1 knowledge test and vision screening, you receive your G1 licence. This is the first stage of Ontario's Graduated Licensing System (GLS). As a G1 driver, you must:
- Always drive with a fully licensed driver (G licence) in the front passenger seat
- Maintain zero blood alcohol concentration
- Not drive on 400-series highways or high-speed expressways unless accompanied by a licensed driving instructor
- Not drive between midnight and 5 a.m.
- Not have more passengers than seatbelts
These restrictions are frequently tested on the G1 exam. Understanding them before your test — not just after — is important.
Preparing for the Knowledge Test
The knowledge test is not difficult if you prepare properly. Most people who fail do so because they underestimated the rules section or relied on guessing rather than studying.
- Read the Ontario Driver's Handbook from cover to cover — at least once
- Use practice tests to identify weak areas and review explanations for every wrong answer
- Study both road signs and rules — both sections must be passed independently
- Pay particular attention to G1 restrictions, right-of-way rules, and school bus laws
